On Friday, August 15, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed the team for the limited-overs series against Ireland and South Africa. For both of the series against the two clubs, Sonny Baker has been called up. The right-arm pacer has yet to make his national team debut.

Even prior to his debut, Baker was in the news. In The Hundred, the 22-year-old bowler claimed a hat-trick for the Manchester Originals against the Northern Super Chargers. Baker became the tournament's fourth bowler to accomplish this accomplishment. On the day of Baker's hat-trick, the Originals prevailed by a score of 57 runs. Northern scored 171 runs before being bowled out for 114. Even with the hat-trick, Baker's start was poor. In the first ten balls, he conceded four boundaries and 17 runs. Baker did not get his first wicket until the fifteenth ball. He bowled Dawid Malan, a countryman. In the first two balls of the following over, the youthful pacer dismissed Jacob Duffy and Tom Lodge, completing his hat-trick. For a total of 21 runs off 17 balls, Baker claimed 3 wickets. The first person in The Hundred's history to take a hat-trick was Imran Tahir. In the 2021 edition, the Proteas legspinner accomplished this feat for the Birmingham Phoenix versus Welsh Fire. In 2023, Tymal Mills of the Southern Brave scored a hat-trick against the same club. Sam Curran of the Oval Invincibles was the third bowler to claim a hat-trick in the match versus London Spirit.
